The new revolution in Taiwan values
In the last decade a new set of values has appeared among young generation in Taiwan. On the one hand, young people has shown their concern of participatory democracy, epitomized by the huge occupation movement in 2014 and other social activism. Their strong support for gay marriage has also exemplified the new values of equality. On the other hand, a new “creativity revolution” and social innovation have changed Taiwan in many aspects. I will argue this new concern of democracy and equality as well as the creativity and innovation are the new Taiwan values. Especially when the world is now facing the danger of democracy retreat and the rise of populism, our defense of democracy and more crucial than ever.
Tieh-chih Chang is currently the Deputy Secretary–General of General Association of Chinese Culture. He is also a prominent Taiwanese writer whose commentary pieces on politics, culture and popular music have been published in major media in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, and international media such as Financial Times (Chinese version). Tieh-chih was a Ph.D candidate of Political Science of Columbia University in New York had had taught in several universities including National Tsing Hua University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and is now a non-residential research associate of Center of Taiwan Studies at SOAS of University of London. Since college years, he has always concerned human rights issues and have been involved in several NGOs. Recently he has curated an exhibition on Taiwan’s history of democratic movement in U.S..
