Operated by Hong Kong-based Genting Cruise Lines, the vessel is carrying approximately 1,200 passengers on a four-day trip from the northern port city of Keelung to outlying Penghu and Lienchiang Counties. The company is set to offer 30 island-hopping trips over the next three months, with itineraries adding stops at outlying Kinmen County and eastern Taiwan’s Hualien County.
MOTC Minister Lin Chia-lung said the tours are part of preparations for the Tourism Bureau’s Year of Island Hopping Tourism set for 2023, adding that they present an appealing option for local vacationers while promoting economic development.
According to Lin, the government will continue to implement disease-fighting measures while spurring the country’s cruise tourism.
Efforts included a virus outbreak drill held on the ship July 23, the MOTC said. It was conducted by MOTC’s Maritime and Port Bureau in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control under the Ministry of Health and Welfare; state-backed Taiwan International Ports Corporation; related customs, immigration, quarantine and security agencies; and public health experts, it added.
In addition to feeling secure in onboard epidemic prevention measures, passengers can enjoy discounts toward purchases at local shops and admissions to National Museum of Marine Science and Technology courtesy of Keelung City Government as part of tourism promotions lasting through the end of October, according to municipality officials.
