On December 20, 2017, Taiwan Representative Mr. Herman Chiu handed over a check for USD500,000 for the "Taiwan/ROC-PIF Scholarship Scheme 2017/18" and another check for USD65,799 for the Taiwan funded "SIS Attachment Program" to the PIF Secretariat.
Mr Chiu remarks:
H.E. Meg Taylor, Secretary General of PIF
Mr. Teanuanua Nicole, and other colleagues from PIF Secretariat
Good afternoon!
It is a great pleasure for my colleague Richard and me to meet with you all here.
I would like to first of all express to the PIF Secretariat and other CROP members our highest esteem for the great work accomplished in further consolidating Pacific Regionalism, and addressing issues such as ocean management, climate change, good governance, and SDG goals. The continued progress achieved by these prominent organizations has made us proud of our partnership with them.
As one of the stakeholders in the Pacific region, Taiwan/ROC attaches great importance to the development of Pacific island states. It has, since year 2000, maintained partnership with the PIF Secretariat and other CROP members, and has been providing funds, averagely 1 million US dollars per annum, towards the Taiwan/ROC-PIF Scholarship Scheme and various regional development projects.
Excellency! We share the idea that to make any meaningful development, human resource is the most important asset, and which can be greatly built up through education and training. This is why we are more than happy to be the partner of the Taiwan/ROC-PIF Scholarship Scheme and the SIS Attachment Program.
Excellency! Given the changing geopolitical and development context of the Pacific, the portfolio you and the entire Secretariat are carrying would continue to grow even bigger and heavier. I wish you all good health and continued success!
Vinaka Vakalevu!
