St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The Government of Republic of China (Taiwan) has once again provided financial support to the local Education sector, donating EC$270,000 dollars to the Ministry of Education.
On Wednesday Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Tom Lee, presented the cheque to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Shawn Richards, which will be used to fund the 2018-2019 Human Resources Development Project.
The project is a federal program dedicated to providing aid to students who consistently exhibit satisfactory behavior and academic performance, and who come from households with incomes below the average socio-economic status.
Expressing gratitude for the support, Deputy Prime Minister Richards assured that the awardees would be urged to accept the scholarship with a sense of responsibility and continue to be a respectful representation among their peers.
“These funds do go a long way and you are doing a great job in assisting our students develop themselves academically. Not only will this contribution be issued locally but there are students who are pursuing studies overseas who will benefit from this donation.”
Ambassador Lee of the ROC highlighted the collaboration between the two countries in areas including education, sports, agriculture and ICT. He said he was particularly enthused about the very substantial investment in Education, which goes a long way to developing the country’s human resources.
Ambassador Lee also informed that in 2019 they intend to increase the donation amount to US$120,000 dollars in order to assist more students.
A scholarship presentation ceremony will be held in November to distribute the disbursements to students from primary, secondary and tertiary level institutions who meet the requirements.
