Representative Wu of the Taipei Mission in the Republic of Latvia was invited to introduce the potential processed food market in Taiwan at a seminar organized by the Latvian Food Quality Cluster in early June. In addition to the latest development of Taiwan's food processing industry and imported food market, he also illustrated knacks and means to Latvian business representatives on how to enter markets of Taiwan and other Asian countries.
As a major supplier of meat and dairy products to the former Soviet Union, Latvia is known for its well-developed agriculture and is promoting added-value agricultural outputs through better food processing and management techniques throughout the years, with an aim to boost its international competitiveness. On the other hand, due to the ongoing mutual embargo on agricultural products imposed by the EU and Russia since 2014, Latvia has spared no efforts in seeking to expand the Asian market in the last few years. In the seminar organized by the Latvian Cluster to its members, Representative Wu stressed that food culture is one of the key issues for Latvian food producers to tackle with when entering the Asian market. For example, Latvian dried-fruit and berry products generally contain around 50 percent of sugar, while Asian customers accept up to only 30 percent. He also pointed out that the Taipei Mission has already facilitated the participation of several Latvian companies in the “Taipei Food Show 2017”and hope to see more companies from Latvia join the Show next year, as it is a great opportunity to promote Latvian fine food products to Taiwan and to acquire Taiwan's high-tech food processing machinery back to Latvia.
Altogether, there are nine Baltic food companies producing cider, chocolate, dried-fruit, cheese and canned fish that participate in the well-known 2017 “Taipei Food Show”in late June this year.
