Representative R. C. Wu of the Taipei Mission in the Republic of Latvia participated in the Rotaract Europe Meeting (REM) 2018, held from Jan. 19 to 21, in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania and delivered a speech entitled " Taiwan's Rotary Clubs and the Rotary International 2021, Taipei", elaborating Taiwan's civil society and its international participation.
The 2018 REM Vilnius brought 400 and plus rotaractors from all over Europe together to share ideas, collaborate on social projects, and build global frendships. Mr. Wu's presentation was included in the program workshops, which centered on exploration of trade between Europe and Lithuania and suicide rate reduction in Lithuania. He touched upon the political and economic development in Taiwan especially in the field of civil society and the progress of preparation of Rotary International Convention Taipei, to be held in 2021. "More than 2000 non-governmental organizations in Taiwan have established ties with their counterparts internationally by partaking in and hosting international conferences and activities, garnering ourstanding results and bearing testimony to the people-to-people diplomacy for Taiwan", Representative Wu stressed.
Taiwan, with more than 34,000 rotarians, has been an active member in the Rotary International. Taiwan veteran rotarian Gary C. K. Huang, the first president from Chinese society, led the Rotary International from 2014 to 2015. Former Rotary International Director Jackson S. L. Hsieh, chair of the 2021 Taipei RI Convention HOC, has spared no effort to prepare the important event.
