A special vegetable and fruit market, the Mobile Market, initiated by the Ministry of Resources and Development and the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) was held at the Jisam Kaisha Basketball Court of Terong community in Rita on May 27.
Although it rained at times, approximately 45 local residents joined ROC Ambassador and Mrs. Daniel D.W. Tang, Senator Sherwood Tibon, and Senators Dennis and Daisy Momotaro at the first Mobile Market for fresh and healthy vegetables and fruits at affordable prices.
Apart from the regular Farmers Market at SSG Solomon Sam Sports Center on the first and third Saturday every month, the first attempt implemented by the Taiwan Technical Mission with the assistance of the Ministry of R&D and the Councilman Arlington Tibon from Majuro Atoll Local Government in order to promote consumption of a healthy diet.
The price of vegetables sold at the Mobile Market are only at one third of the normal market price and were freshly collected from Taiwan Technical Mission’s farm (Laura Farm) beforehand. As no chemical fertilizer or pesticide was applied in Laura Farm, food safety is also ensured in the produce.
The aim is to promote vegetable consumption in communities distant from the downtown area such as Rita.
