H.E. Ambassador Daniel D.W. Tang of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Hon. Minister Dennis Momotaro of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Commerce joined at the Marshalls Energy Company Warehouse in Delap for the handover ceremony of 100 solar streetlights and 66 batteries funded by the government of the ROC (Taiwan) on Monday, April 2, 2018. Hon. Vice Speker of the Nitijela Jejwarick Anton, Hon. Senator Daisy Alik-Momotaro, Hon. Senator Atbi Riklon and Majuro Councillady Betty Imaikata were invited to witness the handover ceremony.
The ROC (Taiwan) government made a Renewable Energy Project contribution of US$200,000 to the RMI government for the procurement and installation of the above mentioned Taiwan manufactured solar streetlights and batteries. The Renewable Energy Project aims to support cooperate with the RMI government in energy initiatives. The 100 new solar streetlights will be distributed to outer island to provide lighting to rural communities. The 66 new batteries will replace old solar streetlights batteries in Majuro.
At the handover ceremony, Ambassador Tang reiterated the ROC (Taiwan) government’s commitment to the partnership between the ROC (Taiwan) and the RMI. The Embassy would make every effort to continuously cooperate with the RMI government in developing renewable energy that will contribute to the welfare of the people of the Marshall Islands and the sustainable development of the RMI. He also expressed his appreciation to Minister Momotaro and his colleagues for their efforts and cooperation to complete the solar streetlights project.
Minister Dennis Momotaro expressed his gratitude towards the ROC (Taiwan) government for the support and partnership in energy initiatives. He shared that the implementation of the Renewable Energy Project began in 2011 with assistance from ROC (Taiwan) Embassy, Ministry of Natural Resources and Commerce and Marshalls Energy Company. He stated that the project is significant because it extends to the communities in the outer islands. Furthermore, the project addresses one of the aims of RMI Agenda 2020 which is improving the welfare of the outer island communities, supports RMI’s national renewable energy target by providing outer islands rural communities access to sustainable clean and reliable energy and the global Sustainable Development Goal 7.
