Taiwanese badminton players have grabbed top prizes this year at the 2018 Denmark Open, walking away with the women’s gold and men’s silver.
In the women’s division, the world’s number one Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan defeated Indian player Saina Nehwal on Sunday (local time) to clinch the gold. This is Tai’s eighth championship win of the year. It also makes her the second ever female player to accumulate more than 100,000 career points. Tai joins Chinese player Li Xuerui in the exclusive club.
Meanwhile, in the men’s division, Taiwan’s top male badminton player, Chou Tien-chou, settled for silver after losing in the men’s final match. In the game, also on Sunday, Chou faced his arch rival, Japanese player Momota Kento, who currently ranks number one in the world.
After a heated battle and multiple changes of lead, Chou narrowly lost the first round, 20 to 22. In round two, Chou took advantage of his opponent’s mistakes and successfully smashed multiple times, taking the round, 21 to 16. But Chou couldn’t handle Momota’s constant change of speed, and ended up losing the final round, 15-21.
Despite losing the match, Chou did manage to defeat several top-ranked players in the tournament. Those wins helped bump up his ranking to third in the world.
