Taipei, Jan. 26 (CNA) French Human Rights Ambassador François Croquette will visit Taiwan for the first time next week, announced the French Office in Taipei (BFT). Croquette will attend the 2019 Taipei Night of Ideas ('La Nuit des idées') to be held in the city on Jan. 31, according to the BFT, which functions as a de facto embassy as France has no diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
Having served as human rights ambassador of France since January 2017, Croquette will also call on Taiwan's ministries as well as representatives of non-governmental organizations and exchange ideas with people he meets on topics regarding social equality, women's participation in politics, crisis of democracy and the death penalty in Taiwan.
Additionally, according to the BFT, Croquette plans to share with Taiwan France's experience in upholding human rights and explore the possibility of cooperation between the two sides on launching a global dialogue on worldwide democratic development. The de facto embassy said Croquette also wishes to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan's human right practice during his first visit to the island from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1.
