I. Main Purpose
The Taiwan Scholarship is granted by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to encourage outstanding Nigeria students (excluding students from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau) to undertake degree programs in Taiwan. It offers study opportunities for a wide range of disciplines at universities in Taiwan. This program also aims at promoting people-to-people relationship between Nigeria and Taiwan, and increasing bilateral academic and educational links of higher learning as well. Likewise, focal point of the program is to develop outstanding  prospective professionals and experts to meet the needs in a global village.

II. Scholarship Grant
a. Tuition and related fees:
The MOE will provide each recipient with tuition fees for up to NTD$40,000 per semester. If the total exceeds NTD$40,000, the remaining amount must be paid to the university/college by the student. Tuition and academic fees do not include any of the following: administrative fees, thesis advising fees, insurance premiums, accommodation and internet access fees, all of which, if any, are payable by the recipients.

b. Stipend:
(a) Undergraduate : A monthly stipend of NTD15,000 (approximately US$500) ;
(b) Master : A monthly stipend of NTD20,000 (approximately US$667) ;
(c) Doctoral : A monthly stipend of NTD20,000 (approximately US$667).

The monthly stipend will be distributed by the recipient’s university/college.  The duration of stipend begins from the month of the recipient’s registration on campus and ends when the award period expires or upon the recipient’s graduation, withdrawal, suspension, expulsion, or revocation of the scholarship.

III. Duration of Scholarships
a. Undergraduate program: maximum 4 years;
b. Master program: maximum 2 years;
c. Doctoral program: maximum 4 years.

After satisfactory completion of a degree-study program, the student may apply for another Taiwan Scholarship for a higher degree. However, the maximum total length of awards is 5 (five) years.

IV. Award Period
September 1, 2019, through the end of the specific study period (maximum durations as set forth in part III)
V. Number of Awardee:  1(one)

VI. Eligibility:
An applicant must meet all of the following criteria:
a. High school graduate or above, with an excellent academic performance in most recent formal academic experience, of good moral character, and does not possess criminal records.
b. Citizen of Federal Republic of Nigeria;
c. Not a national of the Republic of China (Taiwan);
d. Not an R.O.C. (Taiwan) Overseas Compatriot student;
e. Has never enrolled in Taiwan for the same level of degree studies;
f. Is not an exchange student in accordance with any agreements of cooperation between an international university/college and an educational institute in Taiwan, at the time of receiving a Taiwan Scholarship;
g. Has never received the scholarship to undertake any degree programs for more than the total award period of 5 years;
h. Has never been disqualified from a Taiwan Scholarship;
i. Is not a recipient of any other scholarship or subsidy offered by the Taiwan government or by any other educational institutions in Taiwan.

VII. Application Deadline:  March 31, 2019 (postmarked)

VIII. Application Documents:
a. A completed Taiwan Scholarship Application Form
b. A photocopy of the applicant’s Nigeria passport
c. A photocopy of diploma and transcript of highest degree obtained (Please obtain an authenticated translation if the original is not in English or Chinese. Translated documents must be authenticated by a Taiwan representative office.)
d. A photocopy of application for admission to a participating university in Taiwan
e. A photocopy of language proficiency proof:
(a) Applications for non all-English study programs: Photocopy of score report or certificate for attaining Level 3 or above on the “Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language” (TOCFL).
(b) Applications for all-English study programs: If English is not your native language, a score report for an English proficiency exam, such as the TOEFL, is required.
Applicants who apply to a program not included in the Ministry of Education’s English Program List must provide a photocopy of an all-English program proof document issued by their intended university/college in Taiwan.
f. Two reference letters, signed and sealed in envelopes.
g. A completed “Taiwan Scholarship Terms of Agreement.”

IX. Universities Participating in the Taiwan Scholarship Program:
Applicants must apply directly for admission within the deadlines specified by the individual universities for the Taiwan Scholarship.

X. Selection & Notification of Application Result:
a. Selection of applicants will be based on a comprehensive review of documents and, if necessary, may include an interview.
b. Applicant will be notified of scholarship decision by May 31, 2019.
c. Applicants awarded a Taiwan Scholarship will be required to submit proof/letter of admission to their university/college to Taipei Trade Office by June 30, 2019. Once admission is confirmed, the said Office will issue an official Certificate of Scholarship to the award recipient.
