Headline News

EU parliamentarians support Taiwan

A total of 155 members of the European Parliament issued a joint statement on Feb. 14, expressing concern about the current status in the Taiwan Strait as Beijing continued to intensify military coercion towards Taipei in recent months. A copy of the statement was presented in Taipei to President Tsai Ing-wen by Werner Langen, European Parliament Taiwan Friendship Group chairman.

Preserving peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region is of “substantial interest” to the EU and its member states, the statement said, adding that the EU continues to support the development of peaceful relations between China and its neighbors, including Taiwan, “through constructive bilateral and inclusive multilateral mechanisms.“ The statement also reiterated firm support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations and activities in which its exclusion is not in line with EU interest.

CNN interview with President Tsai Ing-wen

In an interview with CNN, President Tsai Ing-wen warns that if the international community acquiesces to the growing interference in Taiwan’s democracy and military intervention by China, it can expect a repeat of this pattern of behavior in other countries. Emphasizing that China’s increased hostility towards Taiwan is reflecting its aggressive new expansionist policy which increasingly relies on military might, Tsai said that other countries in the region could soon find themselves the target of this policy.

As far as Taiwan is concerned, “our challenge is whether our independent existence, security, prosperity and democracy can be maintained. This is the biggest issue for Taiwan,” Tsai said.

Cabinet approved bill for same-sex marriage

The Cabinet approved a draft bill which will serve as the basis for same-sex couples aged 18 and older to marry, which will be submitted to the Legislative Yuan before March 1st for review before taking effect on expectedly May 24.

The bill covers areas such as inheritance rights, medical rights, adoption of children and monogamy. It prescribes that the rights and duties granted to married couples, as stipulated in the Civil Code, will also apply to married same-sex couples.

Machinery output 2018 hits new high

The production value of Taiwan’s machinery industry hits a new high in 2018, with a growth of 7.3% from a year earlier to US$38.25 billion.
