Thousands march in solidarity with protesters in Hong Kong
Tens of thousands of Taiwanese took to the streets in Taipei on Sunday (Sept. 28) to march in solidarity with Hong Kong protesters against encroachment on their freedoms.
The protest, the "929 Taiwan Hong Kong Grand Parade - Support Hong Kong, Fight Against Totalitarianism," organized by some 20 civic organizations and student activist groups, mobilized up to 100,000 people according to the organizers.
Several artworks, such as the Boat of Freedom and a statue of the Goddess of Democracy, were displayed at the site to express that Taiwan and Hong Kong are in the same boat in the fight for democracy.
Taiwan to test cyber defense in first joint exercise with U.S.
Taiwan will test its cyberwar defense capabilities in the first ever Cyber Offensive and Defense Exercises with the United States.
Vice-Premier Chen Chi-mai, who currently serves as the head of the cabinet department for information security, says that as part of ongoing own efforts to respond to increasing cyber-attacks targeting Taiwan’s government, the joint exercises with the U.S. will be held in early November.

BERI: Taiwan 4th best place to invest
In the latest U.S. Business Environment Risk Intelligence (BERI) report, Taiwan has maintained the status as the 4th best investment destination in the world with a score of 64 points for profit opportunities recommendation (POR).
Taiwan ranks only behind Switzerland (74 points), Norway (69 points) and Singapore (65 points) respectively.
In terms of the operations and foreign exchange indexes, Taiwan is ranked fourth and first respectively.

Investment spree in Taiwan
2019 marks the beginning of an explosive surge of investment in Taiwan. Citing statistics from the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, President Tsai Ing-wen said that Taiwan is on the trajectory to lead Asia’s four tigers in economic performance with an expected GDP growth of 2.46% in 2019.
Tsai also pointed out that Taiwan has seen an accumulated returnee investment of US$17.1 billion in the first eight months, which is expected to reach US$25.3 billion by the end of 2019.
Taiwan economy tops Four Asian Tigers
According to Bloomberg, Goldman Sachs has adjusted its economic growth forecast for Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong, the “Four Asian Tigers.”
Although the estimate of Taiwan’s growth rate for 2019 was dropped from 2.4% to 2.3%, it still tops that of South Korea (1.9%), Singapore (0.4%) and Hong Kong (0.2%).
Taitung university library wins international architecture award
The 2019 World Prix d’Excellence Award for Public Infrastructure Amenities was awarded by the international real estate federation FIACI to the National Taitung University Library.
The building is shaped like a pyramid and includes elements referring to the mountains and the ocean. The grass growing on the roof emphasized the close ties to nature while the structure looks like a huge book viewed from the air.
