‘One country, two systems’ not feasible in Taiwan

Beijing's "broken promise" to Hong Kong to let it maintain a high degree of autonomy for at least 50 years,  shows that the so-called ‘one country, two systems’ model for both Hong Kong and Macau is not feasible in Taiwan, President Tsai Ing-wen said, expressing dismay over China's passage of the national security law for Hong Kong.

The President again pledged Taiwan's help to Hong Kongers, citing the launch of the Taiwan-Hong Kong Services and Exchanges Office, which provides one-stop services to Hong Kongers who wish to study, do business, make investments, or seek asylum in Taiwan. The office also offers consultations to Hong Kong-based businesses and NGOs that wish to relocate to Taiwan.

At the opening of this special office in Taipei on July 1, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Chen Ming-tong said that China's new draconian security law imposed on Hong Kong is harboring direct implications for not only Taiwanese citizens but for all foreign nationals, both in and outside of Hong Kong.

Chen was referring to Article 38 in that law, which states: "This Law shall apply to offences under this Law committed against the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region from outside the Region by a person who is not a permanent resident of the Region.”

Foreign students incline to stay in Taiwan

More than 80 percent of foreign students hope to stay and find a job in Taiwan after graduation. The result comes from a survey by the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan, based on 3,724 valid responses from foreign students enrolled in Taiwanese universities.

Of the foreign students, 85.6 percent are from Asian nations and 68 percent of age between 18 and 24.

Asked whether they wanted to stay in Taiwan after graduation, 83.6 percent of respondents express the wish to do so, provided that good internship or job opportunities are available.

African students are the demographic group that expresses the strongest desire to continue their stay, and 89.3 percent of respondents believe that having studied in Taiwan will benefit them greatly in future.

Taiwan top supplier of e-bikes to the EU

Taiwan has become the top supplier of e-bikes to the EU with e-bike exports to the EU totaled US$863 million in 2019, up 128.4% year on year, according to the ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

The Netherlands, U.S. and Germany were the top three destinations, in that order.

Taiwan accounted for 64.7% of the EU’s import market, up from 32.4% the year before. E-bikes are becoming a major driver of growth in the domestic bicycle manufacturing industry, increasing from 2.7% of total sector output in 2015 to 35.5 % in last year.

China Airlines: No layoffs despite COVID-19

Taiwan’s China Airlines (CAL) assured investors that there will be no plans to slash jobs as the coronavirus pandemic continues to take a toll on the travel industry.

CAL is among the hardest-hit airlines worldwide, with passenger flights currently operating at just three to four percent capacity and average monthly revenue plummeting from NT$10 billion to NT$400 million.

CAL, though, has managed to deliver a stellar performance in the business of cargo transport. The company's 18-plane cargo fleet racked up NT$7 billion in revenues in April and a record-breaking NT$9 billion in May, CAL chairman Hsieh Shih-chien said at a shareholders meeting.
