TAIWAN CHORUS
Concert in Museu de Oriente, Lisbon, Portugal
At 17:00 p.m., Saturday, August 12, 2017 the southern Taiwan-based TAIWAN CHORUS will perform masterpieces by “national treasures” Tysen Hsiao, Yau-Tai Hwang, Fu-Yu Lin and various other Taiwanese composers, at the Auditorio of Museu de Oriente in Lisbon, Portugal.
The concert will feature a diversified repertoire of more than 10 songs ranging from psalms and art songs to Taiwanese folk tunes, performed in Mandarin as well as in the Taiwanese and Hakka dialects. Each of these intriguingly timeless musical gems will be an epitome of Formosa’s delicate choral arts and folklore, passionately interpreted with the conducting and tenor solo skills of Wu Hung Chang, an Italy-trained opera singer and choir conductor, and breathtaking solos of Wu Ting Hsuan, the choir-leading prima donna.
By popularizing art songs and adding an upscale touch to folk music, General Director and Conductor Hung-Chang Wu has been committed to the Chorus’s founding purpose of “chronicling the history with singing”, ever since its 1992 debut in Kaohsiung City. Over the years, TAIWAN CHORUS has systematically presented remarkable vocal and choir works by contemporary Taiwanese composers, while engaged in ethnomusicological recording projects, in an attempt to preserve and promote the country’s invaluable cultural heritage. Thanks to such an amazing reputation as “the best ‘mouthpiece’ of national invaluable composers”, TAIWAN CHORUS has thrived with state funding for consecutive years as an Excellent Performance Group selected by the cabinet-level Council for Cultural Affairs. It is frequently invited to perform overseas in countries across Europe, the Americas and Asia, presenting ingenious and heart-touching vocal extravaganzas that evoke acclaim from music critics worldwide.
The 2017 Portugal concert will mark TAIWAN CHORUS’ 20th successive year to perform internationally.
