Taiwan applies for participation in 2018 General Assembly of INTERPOL as Observer

Criminal Investigation Bureau Commissioner Tsai Tsan-Po has sent a letter to INTERPOL Secretary-General Jürgen Stock, applying for participation as an Observer in the 87th General Assembly of INTERPOL, which will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 18 to 21. In the letter, which was delivered to INTERPOL headquarters in Lyon, France, on September 17, Commissioner Tsai also requested that INTERPOL give favorable consideration to Taiwan’s meaningful participation in INTERPOL meetings, mechanisms and activities, including the I-24/7 global police communications system and various training programs.
Taiwan’s campaign for participation in INTERPOL commenced in 2016. Through the government’s concerted efforts, considerable awareness and support have been raised among like-minded countries, creating strong momentum for the campaign moving forward. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to work closely with the National Police Agency and other related government agencies to urge INTERPOL to formulate pragmatic and feasible arrangements for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the organization, so as to ensure that no gaps and loopholes exist in the global fight against cross-border crime.
Established in September 1923, INTERPOL currently has 192 Member States. Its mission is to ensure and advance cooperation among criminal police authorities globally. INTERPOL is the world’s second-largest intergovernmental organization after the UN, as well as the largest and foremost cooperation platform to fight and prevent transnational crime. (E)
