On 4 August, Representative Lin's letter on the cancellation of the 2019 East Asian Youth Games in Taiwan due to Chinese pressure was published by The Times. In his letter, Representative Lin highlighted that the cancellation of the Games, along with banning Taiwan from participating in the World Peace Choral Festival in Vienna, “reveals that China is not only suppressing Taiwan internationally but also meddling in international sports and cultural events to advance its agenda.” The Taiwan Head of Missions in the UK also pointed out that such action fundamentally undermines the rights of all participating nations and squanders the efforts of the host city, Taichung, which spent three years and US$22 million in preparation.
The letter called on the international community to recognise that China’s hegemony poses harm to international order and operations. “Taiwan is the canary in the coalmine of China’s rise; China’s success in manipulating international events should serve as a stark warning to other parties of what lies ahead if they refuse to kowtow to Beijing,” Representative Lin concluded.
