On 2 November, Taiwan Director An Bang was invited by the London East Asia Film Festival (LEAFF) to participate in a panel discussion titled “Stories of Women” at Asia House. The panel also featured Korean Director Shin Su Won and was chaired by British Film Institute Curator Helen De Witt. During the discussion, An Bang talked about the inspiration behind his critically-acclaimed movie Sen Sen and lauded the increasing presence of women in Taiwanese cinema. The directors also discussed the relationship between mother and child, the complexity of friendships and family relations as well as the challenges of motherhood in the context of East Asian culture. The discussion was followed by a ‘Taiwan Night’ celebrating the success of Taiwan’s participation in LEAFF 2018, in which ten Taiwanese films were screened and received widespread praise.
In his opening remarks, Representative Lin praised the tenacity of East Asian women, as well as the filmmakers who were bringing their stories to the big screen. Representative Lin also expressed gratitude for the strengthening relationship between the TRO and LEAFF since the organisation’s inaugural festival was held in 2015.
