On 28 November, the event ‘Chinese Patrilineage Culture & Gender Discrimination’ focusing on Taiwanese author Lin Man-chiu’s 2014 ‘Found in Translation’ award-winning novel The Ventriloquist’s Daughter was held at the London School of Economics (LSE) Seligman Library. Lin Man-chiu, who was joined in conversation by the novel’s translator Helen Wang, said that the book closely resembled her childhood, and the impact that traditional patriarchal values had on her experience growing up. Helen Wang added that not only was the novel “brilliant and full of suspense,” but that it accurately reflected traditional gender and social structures.
