On 18 December 2019, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd (TSMC)’s technology development was spotlighted in a piece by The Economist titled “A look inside the factory around which the modern world turns” which featured in the magazine’s Christmas Specials. The article highlighted TSMC’s significance in the global semiconductor supply chain, pointing out that major international firms, including Apple, Alibaba, Visa, Disney and others, would be nowhere without the Taiwanese chip-maker. TSMC’s fabrication plants provide many of the high-performance chips which make those products and services possible, The Economist stated, adding that phones, online marketplaces, smart cards, etc., all depend on them. The piece pointed out that with up to 90% of the market for third-party manufacture of advanced chips, TSMC dominates the production of infrastructure on which the modern world relies by manipulating matter with a precision no other company can match.
