AFI Silver Theatre presents “Taiwan Cinema Rediscovered”
The AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center (AFI Silver) will present “Taiwan Cinema Rediscovered” to screen seven Taiwanese classic and contemporary movies from October 27 to November 21, 2019. The screenings offer a rare opportunity for the audience from the greater Washington metropolitan area to appreciate the prominent Taiwan filmmakers’ works and their efforts on the big screen. The “Taiwan Cinema Rediscovered” aims to explore the multitude of contributions that Taiwanese voices have made to the global art of film through the exhibition of works from both long-established auteurs and rising voices in the field. In presenting a combination of both classic and contemporary films, this series aims to provide a wide-ranging sampling of Taiwanese film and culture to movie audiences in the DC metropolitan area, serving both as an introduction to the cinema of Taiwan for the newcomer and an invitation to further explore for all other film lovers.
This series is made possible by the support of the Ministry of Culture, Republic of China (Taiwan), and Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States. With seven films highlighting the breadth of Taiwan’s cinematic talent, moviegoers can see classics from New Cinema masters Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Edward Yang and Second New Wave pioneers Tsai Ming-liang and Ang Lee, a 15th anniversary screening of “20-30-40” by multi-hyphenate Sylvia Chang, and then take a peek into Taiwan’s exciting contemporary film landscape with Midi Z’s breathtaking Cannes-debuted psychological thriller NINA WU.
The curtain of the “Taiwan Cinema Rediscovered” film series will be raised on October 27, 2019 by “Daughter of the Nile (Hou Hsiao-Hsien, 1987)”, and followed by “Taipei Story (Edward Yang, 1985)”、”20-30-40 (Sylvia Chang, 2004)”、”The Wedding Banquet (Ang Lee, 1993)”、”A Brighter Summer Day (Edward Yang, 1991)”、” Nina Wu (Midi Z, 2019)” and “Rebels of the Neon God (Tsai Ming-liang, 1992)”.
