2022 Taiwan Fellowship online application is available from May 1 to July 14
The Fellowship was established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to encourage experts and scholars who are interested in topics related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, the Asia-Pacific region, and sinology to conduct advanced research at universities or academic institutions in Taiwan.
We welcome research topics related to Taiwan’s domestic and foreign policy issues, including the country’s economic and political landscape amidst the pandemic, regional security, New Southbound Policy, cybersecurity, defense strategies, efforts to combat disinformation, and gender studies.
Financial assistance
- Monthly grants are paid at the beginning of every month.
- Professors, associate professors, research fellows, or associate research fellows: NT$60,000;
- Assistant professors, assistant research fellows, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, doctoral program students: NT$50,000.
- One direct round-trip economy-class air ticket between the country of residence and Taiwan (with a maximum subsidy of NT$55,000 if flying from the US).
- Group accident insurance for the duration of the research in Taiwan.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants include foreign nationals who are professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates or doctoral program students at related departments of overseas universities, or those who are research fellows at an equivalent level in academic institutions abroad.
Duration
The duration of the fellowship may range from a minimum of three months to a maximum of one year. Recipients may begin the fellowship in Taiwan as early as January 2022 and must complete the fellowship by December 2022.
Application procedures
The application period is from May 1 to July 14, 2021. *June 15 update: Application deadline extended to July 14, 2021. Shortlisted candidates will be notified in November 2021.

Step 2 - Mail-in:
- Application Form (please print the completed online application form);
- Resume (including a publication list);
- Research proposal (three pages in principle using a standard research format); and
- Two letters of recommendation, or one letter of recommendation and one letter of consent from the highest administrator of the applicant’s affiliated institute.
