The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta held a panel discussion on May 4 in TECO’s conference room. Director General Vincent Liu hosted the event. Dr. William Cheng of Troy University and Dr. Dalton Lin of Georgia Tech gave presentations on the topic, “Taiwan’s Smart Power and Her International Participation.”
DG Liu received the scholars and thanked them for participating in the event. He also talked about Taiwan’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Joseph Wu, and his goals of foreign policy. DG Liu highlighted Taiwan’s international situation and participation, especially Taiwan’s efforts to participate in the WHA and the WHO. Finally, he promoted Taiwan Scholarship and Taiwan Fellowship programs offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, and welcome more scholars to apply.
Dr. William Cheng presented the topic from an economist’s point of view. He explained that between the existing power, the USA, and the rising power, China, Taiwan should find ways as a hedge to survive and try not to be caught in the crossfire. He suggested Taiwan should have strategies to protect its own freedom and safety.
Dr. Dalton Lin used a game of common aversion theory to explain the relationship between Taiwan and China. He also explained that Taiwan has become an important member in today’s internet/information global network. He noted that Taiwan should spend more efforts to connect with NGOs.
More than twenty scholars and media representatives attended the panel discussion, including Dr. John Garver from Georgia Tech, Dr. Holli Semetko from Emory University, Dr. Chien-Pin Li from Kennesaw State University, and Liz Dundee and Anastasia Krasnoperova from the Atlanta Council on International Relations.
