Director General Vincent Liu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta hosted a reception to celebrate the 107th National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on October 5th at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North.
In his remarks, DG Liu recounted achievements regarding Taiwan and its relations with the United States. He noted that Taiwan’s trade volume with the US enjoys continuous growth, and that President Trump signed the Taiwan Travel Act in March, 2018, encouraging high-level officials’ exchange visits from both countries. He stated that the US has passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019, which helped strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities. And the American Institute in Taipei also dedicated a new compound this year.
DG Liu also mentioned that TECO Atlanta has launched its own official Facebook website to provide updated news of Taiwan and the TECO office. He talked about TECO hosting “Taiwan Michelin Night” and sponsoring the “Taste of Taiwan” dinner gala in Atlanta to promote both Taiwanese culinary art and local ingredients. Furthermore, he pointed out that 2019 is the 40th anniversary of the Taipei-Atlanta Sister City relation. There will be lots of celebrations during the year.
More than 300 guests attended the reception. The VIP guests included Karen Handel, US Congresswoman; Mark Hammond, South Carolina Secretary of State; Erica Galyon, Kentucky Assistant Secretary of State; Felicia Moore, Atlanta City Council President; Commissioners and Senior Advisers of the Overseas Community Affairs Council; and representatives from congressional offices, state and local government, and the diplomatic corps.
Ms. Ellen Chiang and Mr. Peter Wei co-hosted the reception. Ms. Charlene Cheng sang the US and ROC National Anthems. Ms. Sufang Chen and her students performed Zeng, and William Pu’s assembly performed a string quartet.
