On behalf of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and in response to Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo’s request for personal protective equipment (PPE) to support medical workers and small businesses, Director-General Douglas Hsu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston (TECO-Boston) donated 100,000 surgical masks to the Rhode Island Department of Emergency Management Agency Director Marc Pappas who accepted the donation on behalf of the governor on June 5, 2020. Senior Consultant Michael Prescott presented a citation on behalf of the governor in appreciation of the donation by Director-General Hsu. House Speaker Pro Tempore Brian Kennedy, a long-term friend and supporter of Taiwan, attended the handover and expressed his gratitude. The critical supplies were distributed by Rhode Island authorities to frontline medical workers and small businesses, allowing Taiwan to take action to boost Rhode Island’s economy and fight COVID-19.
Taiwan and Rhode Island share a long history of friendship and cooperation. The 100K medical masks were made in and directly shipped from Taiwan. This is the first time that Rhode Island has received a donation of masks directly from a foreign government. Taiwan cherishes its partnership with Rhode Island and joins hands with the Ocean State during this challenging time.
In addition to the above donation, TECO-Boston also donated an additional 10,500 surgical masks to Rhode Island Commerce, 10,500 surgical masks to the Pawtucket City Government, and 10,500 surgical masks to the Central Falls City Government. Lieutenant Governor Daniel McKee expressed his appreciation for Taiwan’s donation which took place at the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council.
