Continuing a record of providing over 200,000 surgical masks, Director-General Douglas Y.T. Hsu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston recently donated 100,000 surgical masks to Tufts Medical Center (TMC) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) respectively, for a total of 200,000 surgical masks.
TMC held a ceremony for the personal protective equipment donation on June 29, with Chief Nursing Officer Terry Hudson-Jinks, Taiwanese American dermatologist Dr. Clarissa Yang, and Director of Supply Chain Operations Ryan Flaherty. They expressed their appreciation to Taiwan for its kindness during this crisis with timely and practical help.
MGH received masks from Director-General Hsu on June 30. Chief of Surgery Dr. Keith Lillemoe attended with Associate Professor of Surgery Dr. David Chang, Professor of Surgery Dr. Kenneth Tanabe and Critical Care and Emergency Medicine Attending Physician Dr. Jarone Lee. On behalf of President Peter L. Slavin, MD, Dr. Lillemore thanked the Taiwan government for a large shipment of life-saving supplies for health care workers.
TMC and MGH attract America’s top medical professionals from across the U.S. who provide world-class health care. While Massachusetts has passed its COVID-19 peak, the specter of a second wave of infections looms over the state’s reopening plans. These much-needed PPE supplies will help protect frontline medical caregivers, enable public health and help Taiwan’s friends in Boston fight the pandemic.
Taiwan is not a member of the World Health Organization, but hopes to make a difference around the globe with concrete action as a good neighbor. These Taiwan-made surgical masks were shipped directly to these two hospitals in the spirit of international friendship and partnership to combat the coronavirus. Taiwan can help and is helping any way we can!
