On August 25, Director-General Jonathan Sun of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston (TECO-Boston) attended the donation ceremony of 2,500 surgical masks from the Brookline Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce (BTCC), represented by President Sharon Hong, to the North Reading Senior Center.
Minority Leader, Massachusetts House of Representatives, Bradley Jones as well as Chairman Donald Wong of the Asian American Caucus were present, along with North Reading Mayor Michael Gilleberto. Rep. Jones said he lived with a senior citizen at home, so the coronavirus was of personal concern to him. As fall approaches, the pandemic could see a resurgence, making the timely donation from the BTCC a greatly appreciated gift for elder health.
Director-General Sun noted Taiwan has already donated over 400,000 surgical masks to Massachusetts, supporting Bay State residents with much needed PPE. Attendees were amazed by the achievement of Taiwan in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic with less than 500 confirmed cases and only seven unfortunate deaths, as the town of North Reading has suffered more cases and deaths than Taiwan.
