On March 13, 2019, Director General Eric Huang delivered a speech at the Iowa State Capitol. Upon the invitation of the Iowa Senate, Director General Huang said that Taiwan and the State of Iowa have developed close economic, trade, agricultural, and educational cooperation. He also told the remarkable story of Dr. Samuel Noordhoff, who served as a missionary and physician in Taiwan for 40 years. Born in Orange City, Iowa and having received a medical degree from the University of Iowa, Dr. Noordhoff established many key healthcare systems in Taiwan. For example, he established Taiwan’s first intensive care unit, first burn treatment center and Asia’s first suicide prevention center. Unfortunately, Dr. Noordhoff passed away in December last year. President Tsai Ing-Wen awarded the Presidential Citation to Dr. Noordhoff’s eldest son in January this year in Taiwan to commemorate Dr. Noordhoff’s outstanding contributions to Taiwan. Director General Huang quoted President Tsai, who said: “Dr. Noordhoff dedicated his life to Taiwan through love, bringing genuine warmth to Taiwanese. We thank Dr. Noordhoff, who will always be a ‘True Taiwanese’ and will forever remain in our hearts.” At the end of his address, Director General Huang thanked Iowans for their friendship and support, looking forward to further strengthening the mutual relationships. After the speech, there was a standing ovation with many senators shaking hands with Director General Huang.
