Taiwan’s digital minister Audrey Tang (@audreyt) joins the Denver Democracy Summit @josefkorbel on Feb. 25 in a talk with @AoDemocracies Executive Director Jonas Parello-Plesner to share the #Taiwan model of fighting the #COVID19 and disinformation.
Tang says the Taiwan model can be summed up as "Countering the pandemic with no lockdown, and countering the infodemic with no takedown." And the playbook, she says, is called "humor over rumor." Cute, harmless graphics carrying clear messages are best tools to counter disinformation and misinformation.
Early detection of disinformation is made possible by the formation of a people-public-private partnership in which the social sector forms an advance warning system allowing web users to report dis- and mis-information. The social sector, fact checkers and journalist would then verify the information and issue clarifications and public alerts where necessary.
Tang says radical transparency and citizen deliberation are the "vaccines" that can truly guard us against infodemic in the long run.
