A special virtual discussion series “Honolulu International Forum on COVID-19 Recovery: Re-energizing Hawaii with Regional Insight” is held by the Pacific Forum. Director General Michael Tseng was invited as the speaker of the first session: “Perspectives from Taiwan” on April 24.
During the conference, DG Tseng mentioned that without lockdown, there were 428 confirmed cases and 6 death in Taiwan until April 25, and attributed this situation to the universal coverage of National Health Insurance in Taiwan, Taiwan’s experience in containing SARS in 2003, the government’s rapid response, Taiwanese people wear masks, the application of new technology and big data, service-oriented quarantine, transparency and proper division of labor by the Central Epidemic Command Center (tracing and treatment done by different medical teams).
DG Tseng highlighted that virus recognizes no boundaries. Taiwan has been hoping to participate in the World Health Organization to make contribution, however was only allowed to participate in 30% of its expert committees. DG Tseng called upon our friends in Hawaii to support Taiwan’s participation in the WHO.
