Taiwanese Comics to be Featured at Comic-Con@Home 2020 Despite the Coronavirus Impact

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has not dampened the enthusiasm of comic book fans for the much-anticipated debut of Comic-Con@Home 2020, an online format of the world comics convention, Comic-Con International: San Diego. Scheduled on July 22-26, 2020, Comic-Con@Home not only features the Online Exhibit showcasing contents from a great cross-section of exhibitors, but also presents over 350 panels. The event will combine aspects of the convention experience with the comforts of home. As one of the exhibitors, Taiwan will display 10 original fantasy comic works from local artists. In addition, Taiwanese manga artist Ponjea will share his experiences about content creation and production at a Comic-Con@Home panel with the theme "Travel Through Time with Comics" at 18:00 PDT on July 24th 2020 (9:00 Taiwan Time on July 25th 2020). The Comic-Con@Home Online Exhibit Hall will go live on July 22. Please join us on time and find the Taiwan Exhibit (#Booth 5524) for various Taiwanese contents!

With support from the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan (R.O.C) and Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles, the Chinese Animation and Comic Publishers Association (CCPA) has organized the virtual Taiwan exhibit and panel for Comic-Con@Home 2020. Following Taiwan’s first participation in the 2019 Comic-Con International with the theme “The Eastern Power: Taiwan Superhero League,” this year the Taiwan exhibit will showcase 10 original fantasy works from Taiwan featuring unique local elements and themes. Works such as Rites of Returning by Zuo Hsuan, The Hidden Level by Chang Sheng, Skanda Mantra of Shiva by T.K Chang Shih-Hsin that contain settings unique to Taiwan. Other works such as Oh, My Goddess! by Chiyou, Search for the Holy Seal by YinYin, Debug – Instruction Manual for a Laptop by nyaroro, The Lucky Star Lights Up Student Council President Everyday! by Twinkle and The Tag-Along: Tiger God by Yuzu and Yang Wan-Ru blend Taiwan’s temple and religious culture with folk legends. Original fantasy works such as Chronos Ruler by Ponjea, The Strongest Sage with the Weakest Crest by Liver Jam and Popo will also be prominently featured during the event. Characters and stories come alive through the skill and creativity of Taiwanese artists, with emphasis on faith, camaraderie, and courage. The artists have also captured a certain mystique and unique style through incorporating Taiwanese styles and elements into their works, attracting readers both at home and abroad.

Ponjea, the first Taiwanese manga creator with serialized works published in an influential Japanese manga periodical, has rich experience in cross-border IP applications and multinational team collaborations. Through Ponjea’s panel "Travel Through Time with Comics," he will immerse the audience in a journey through time by introducing his original fantasy manga Chronos Ruler. He will also share his inspiration, story development, character design, animation production, as well as real-life experience creating manga works in Taiwan. The eye-catching live sketching process and the animation PVs will also be revealed. Viewers are invited to access the panel through the Comic-Con YouTube channel at https://www.comic-con.org/cciathome/2020/video/t0rsBYUw1HA. Be sure to stay tuned on time and don’t miss out any exciting content!

Since its inception in 1970, Comic-Con International: San Diego has become the largest animation and comics convention in the world. It is also regarded as one of the world’s two premier comics festivals alongside with the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France. The convention, typically held in July each year with attendance topping 130,000, has 700 events taking place each year featuring comics and popular arts, including workshops and educational programming, film screenings, games, the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards (the “Oscars” of the comics industry), a masquerade costume competition, and autograph signings, bringing together aspiring works to fans and industry professionals. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the convention has been changed to online virtual Comic-Con@Home this year. In addition to the exclusive contents unveiled by exhibitors, a virtual masquerade costume competition will also be organized. Furthermore, there will be more than 350 virtual panels covering a wide array of topics awaiting eager fans and viewers to explore over the five-day event.
