Press release No. 001
In the comments by Spokesperson of the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations on media reports about the planned Taiwan visit by US Permanent Representative to the UN, it is stated that the “one-China principle is widely recognized by the international community and is a basic norm of international relations affirmed by the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758.” The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York strongly objects to this erroneous statement, which seeks to mislead the international community by wrongfully citing the UNGA Resolution 2758 and equating the so-called “one China principle” with basic norms of international relations.
The UNGA Resolution 2758 does not address the issue of Taiwan’s representation in the UN, nor does it state that Taiwan is part of the PRC. Only Taiwan’s democratically elected government can represent its 23.5 million people. The PRC has no right to speak for Taiwan.
