Mayors of Taoyuan City and Newark Hold Virtual Meeting on Pandemic, Economic Recovery, and Future Collaboration
Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan of Taoyuan City held a virtual meeting with Mayor Ras Baraka on January 12 to exchange views on fighting the pandemic, economic recovery, and future collaboration. On behalf of the Government of Taiwan and the Taoyuan City Government, Ambassador James K. J. Lee of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York donated 10,000 surgical masks and 2,000 N95 masks to the people of Newark. Mayor Cheng also witnessed the donation online.
As COVID-19 continues to spread, the City of Newark, under Mayor Baraka’s leadership, has adopted measures to contain the pandemic, while also launching comprehensive assistance programs for residents and small businesses. Taiwan believes that, through the joint efforts of Mayor Baraka and the citizens of Newark, the city will successfully emerge from the pandemic even stronger than before. Taiwan will continue to stand together with Newark throughout this fight.
In his remarks, Ambassador Lee said that Taoyuan and Newark have a lot in common. Both are major international airline hubs, featuring well-developed logistics and warehouse infrastructure. Moreover, both are aspiring to further develop strong, knowledge-based, and technology-driven economies.
Under its Aerotropolis and Asian Silicon Valley initiatives, Taoyuan is actively developing its green energy, unmanned vehicle, and Internet of Things industries. Newark is also committed to strengthening its position as a smart city and a robust technology center by launching LinkNWK and other initiatives.
These discussions will lay the foundation for a viable partnership and future collaborations. Through continued engagement, both cities’ achievements in the fields of culture, education, and technology can be further enhanced.
