On January 14, the first edition of the Selfless Service Price took place in Taiwan. This award was esta- blished by the Jesuit-run Kuangchi Program Service (KPS) in collaboration with AsiaNews and the Taiwan Bishops’ Conference and delivered to 30 individuals in 8 categories who anonymously helped other people to improve their living conditions and foster a spirit of re-conciliation in their communities.
Vice President Chen Chien-jen was the first to award the prizes, as he took great pride in “participating in this gesture of gratitude to the people who support the Taiwanese community each day.” The Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Apostolic Nunciature in Taiwan, Msgr. Sladan Cosic, also delivered the award to the winners, representing Pope Francis and his spirit of closeness to those in need.
Among the recipients of the award, Sister Loewe Marianeldis distinguished herself in the “Social Commitment” category. She has been living in Taiwan since 1962 serving the poor and, even now that she has retired, she dedicates herself to people with AIDS who often need more moral support than material aid.
