Ambassador Douglas Hsu was interviewed by Nikkei Asia, with the interview published on 1 April.
Ambassador Hsu called for Taiwan’s inclusion in the CPTPP, stressing that in today’s uncertain global environment, the pact’s focus on transparency and predictability offers much-needed stability. He noted that some members hesitate to voice support for Taiwan due to pressure from Beijing, and urged them to set aside political concerns, as the CPTPP is a trade agreement—not a political one. Taiwan will continue to demonstrate its high standards and reputation as a responsible trading partner, particularly to Australia. Referring to the presence of three Chinese warships near Australia’s east coast in February 2025, Ambassador Hsu pointed out that such shows of force are a daily reality for Taiwan. He said China is testing its ability to operate across multiple maritime theaters, and Taiwan’s long experience in managing such threats offers valuable lessons. Taiwan is increasing its defense budget and remains committed to defending itself, while working closely with like-minded partners.
