TECO in Australia and the Taiwan Association of Canberra Australia jointly hosted a screening of A Chip Odyssey: Taiwan’s Semiconductor Rise on 1 May, bringing together members of the Taiwanese community, friends of Taiwan, and distinguished guests to explore the story behind Taiwan’s world-leading semiconductor industry. Ambassador Douglas Hsu attended the event and delivered remarks at the pre-screening reception.
In his remarks, Ambassador Hsu noted that Taiwan has recently reached an important economic milestone, with its stock market surpassing those of Canada and the United Kingdom to become the world’s sixth-largest market. Driven by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies, Taiwan’s semiconductor industry continues to attract global attention. He emphasized, however, that this achievement is not only a story of technological success, but also a story of people. Half a century ago, Taiwanese engineers travelled abroad to acquire new skills, factory workers—particularly women—laid the foundations of Taiwan’s manufacturing excellence, and policymakers and scientists made bold decisions amid uncertainty. Taiwan did not know success was guaranteed, but it chose to believe in the future and move forward.
A Chip Odyssey: Taiwan’s Semiconductor Rise documents Taiwan’s transformation into a global semiconductor powerhouse. Today, Taiwan produces around 60 percent of the world’s semiconductors and more than 90 percent of the most advanced chips. Despite ongoing external pressures and geopolitical challenges, Taiwan continues to innovate and serve as a reliable partner in global supply chains. Taiwan will continue working with like-minded partners to support regional peace and stability, promote open markets and transparent systems, and uphold a rules-based international order.
