? Remembering Prof. Chwei-Liang Chiou — “The Brightest Star in the Southern Hemisphere” ✨
The first overseas screening of the documentary “The Brightest Star in the Southern Hemisphere — In Memory of Life’s Good Prof. C.L. Chiou” was held on October 25 at Hoyts Cinema in Brisbane Southside. This touching and beautifully produced film, directed by Ms. Ligu Chen, was organized by the World Arts & Multicultural Inc. (WAMCI) and the Taiwan Friendship Association Queenslands (TFAQ)to commemorate the late Presidential National Policy Advisor, Prof. Chwei-Liang Chiou — a key figure in strengthening Taiwan–Australia relations and the driving force behind the founding of the Brisbane Taiwanese Film Festival.
Director-General William Fan and Mrs. Fan, joined by Director Jone Hsu and Officer Carrie Hsu, attended the event. Distinguished guests included Mrs. Grace Lin (Prof. Chiou’s widow), OCAC Commissioner Melody Chen, OCAC Advisors Chin-Wen Wen, Henry Chen, and Mark Yu, Federation of Taiwanese Associations of Queensland President Wayne Ko, WAMCI President Susan Yang, Taiwanese Fridenship Association Queensland President Koda Chen, former Federal MP Graham Perrett, Brisbane BCC Deputy Chair Steven Huang, as well as many of Prof. Chiou’s outstanding students, friends, and community representatives — all gathering to pay tribute to his remarkable legacy.
In his remarks, DG Fan expressed deep appreciation to Director Chen, her production team, the interviewees, and the organizers for their dedication in creating and presenting this meaningful documentary. He highlighted Prof. Chiou’s decades of service in Queensland, where he devoted himself to community building, cultural and educational development, and the promotion of democratic values.
DG Fan noted that Prof. Chiou was a pioneering bridge between Taiwan and Australia — nurturing students, mentoring the next generation, and laying a strong foundation for Taiwan’s presence in the local community with his intellect, compassion, and integrity. His lifelong contributions to advancing Taiwan–Australia friendship and speaking up for Taiwan on the international stage will always be remembered and cherished.
As former OCAC Minister Wu once said, Prof. Chiou truly lived up to his title as “the brightest star in the Southern Hemisphere.” Through his life, he embodied ideals, courage, and a deep sense of humanity.
Prof. Chiou once said, “Life is full of contradictions.” Yet he always met challenges with humor and grace — fearlessly making Taiwan’s voice heard in Australia and around the world. Watching this documentary, one cannot help but be moved by his warmth, wit, and unwavering spirit.
Respect, LG. ?
