Guidelines for Visa Application to the Republic of China (Taiwan) for Australian Nationals Joining the Working Holiday Program
*Qualification requirements
- Be between the ages of 18 and 30 (inclusive) on the date the application is submitted.
- Come unaccompanied by dependents.
- Not have previously benefited from this Working Holiday Program.
- Be in Australia.
*Required documents
- Complete the Working Holiday Visa Application form online at https://visawebapp.boca.gov.tw (Print out the hardcopy form after submitting online, and sign.)
- Original Australian passport with a remaining validity of more than one year from the day you enter ROC;
- Two 2-inch colour photos (Australian passport photo standard) taken within 6 months;
- Round trip flight ticket or proof of the capability to purchase it;
- Financial proof of at least NT$ 100,000 (approximately AU$5,000 – subject to the change of foreign exchange rates) of living expenses
- Proof of full medical and hospitalization insurance during the stay in the ROC;
- Original hardcopy National Police Certificate issued by the Queensland or Northern Territory Police* (If your Police Certificate is issued by the AFP, the certificate has to be authenticated by Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Australia prior to lodging visa application to our office in Brisbane.)
- Health check certificate (click here to download Health check form) issued within recent 3 months is required for Australian applicants according to the Working Holiday Scheme Arrangements signed between ROC and Australia;
- Additional documents may be required after submission
- Visa fee: AU$144 (to be paid by Cash, Bank Cheque or Money Order only);
- Applications lodged by post: please pay by Money Order to “TAIPEI ECONOMIC & CULTURAL OFFICE” and include a prepaid self-addressed Registered Post or Express Post Platinum return envelope.
Processing Time: approx. 10 business days (2 weeks)
Type of Visa issued: Visitor Visa
Notice: Australian participants will initially receive a visa good for six-month stay which can be extended for additional six months. No later than 15 days before the expiry of their first six-month stay, participants may apply for the extension at the National Immigration Agency service center in their city or county of residence in Taiwan. No further extensions or changes to visa type will be permitted thereafter. Participants should not work for the same employer for more than six months during their visit.
Additional information for Australian nationals participating in the working holiday scheme
- According to Article 4 of the Regulations on the Permission and Administration of the Employment of Foreign Workers, visas issued under a working holiday scheme are regarded as work permits. Therefore, separate work permits need not be obtained. However, please note the following:
- Participants should comply with the laws, regulations, and statutes of Taiwan and may not engage in employment that is contrary to the purpose of the working holiday scheme.
- During the twelve months of stay in Taiwan, participants may not work continuously and may not work for the same employer for more than three months. The actual work period may not exceed the validity of the visa.
- Employment for specialized or technical jobs must meet related qualifications recognized in the R.O.C. (Taiwan), as well as regulations on registration to practice.

- Tax on income will be withheld in accordance with the Income Tax Act. Please refer to the eTax Portal website of the Ministry of Finance. (https://www.etax.nat.gov.tw/etwmain/en/announcement/alien-individual-income-tax)
- Participants in the working holiday scheme may take courses to learn Mandarin for up to three months but may not take formal classes in any other subject.
- After entry, participants are not allowed to apply for a change of visa.
