41 cross-party Members of the European Parliament cosigned a joint letter to EU Council President Charles Michel, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, HR/VP Josep Borrell, European Commissioner for Trade, Valdis Dombrovskis and European Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton to call for the EU’s solidarity with Lithuania and urge the Commission to take concrete measures in assisting the country.
The joint letter pointed out that the PRC’s aggressive rhetoric and measures constitute de facto trade sanctions against Lithuania. Such actions and practices violate international norm and WTO regulations. They also directly impact the underlying principles of the EU Single Market.
The European Parliament Recommendation on “EU-Taiwan political relations and cooperation” adopted on 21 October 2021 encourages increased economic, cultural, scientific, political and people-to-people exchanges, including at the most senior level between the EU and Taiwan. The European Parliament has expressed welcome to the plan to set up Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania and condemns China’s reaction to impose sanctions against Lithuania.
The MEPs stressed that failing to respond to China’s actions would only embolden it to take further coercive measure agains Lithuania or any other EU Member State and urged the EU leadership to demonstrate solidarity with Lithuania in both words and deeds in order to defend the principles of the integrated EU Single Market.
We sincerely thank the cross-party MEPs for demonstrating solidarity with Lithuania and support the relationship between Taiwan and Lithuania.
