In the March issue of the Dutch-language magazine Doorbraak, Ambassador Tsai Ming-Yen was interviewed on the topic of "the China threat”. Under the standout headline quote of "With REGIMES like these, you have to dare draw a REDLINE", Ambassador Tsai outlined the situation in the Taiwan Strait.
Tsai said that over the years China has intensified its compound threats against Taiwan, including military coercion, targeted disinformation, political infiltration and economic pressure.
Having lived under the threat of Chinese force for the past few decades, Taiwan is committed to building its own military deterrent, Tsai noted, before warning against the underestimation of Taiwan's defensive capabilities. In summation, China may be able to bite Taiwan easily, but it will not be easy to swallow it.
The Ambassador further highlighted Taiwan's experience of interacting with its strong neighbours, and knowledge that the most important thing is to forge a domestic consensus. For many years, Taiwanese society has extensively discussed cross-strait relations. When interacting with authoritarian states, Tsai stated, it is important to be brave enough to draw the red line that Taiwan will do whatever it takes to defend its free and democratic way of life.
