The 30 Co-chairs and members of the "Formosa Club", whether participating in person or remotely, or with recorded congratulatory messages, held its first "Unity Summit" in Brussels on 24 May, 2023 coinciding with the World Health Assembly. Dr. Roy Chun Lee, Taiwan Deputy Foreign Minister was invited to the Summit as the guest of honor. A joint statement was issued after the Unity Summit, reaffirming the Club's firm stance for Taiwan. Ambassador Remus Li-Kuo Chen was also present to witness this historic moment. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the many co-chairs of Taiwan Friendship Groups from parliamentarians of various European countries who have spared no efforts to support Taiwan!
The aforementioned joint statement reaffirmed the three main positions of the Formosa Club: (1) Supporting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, stressing that Cross-Strait issues must be resolved peacefully, and the status quo should not be unilaterally changed against the will of the people of Taiwan. (2) Supporting Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations including, but not limited to, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). (3) Emphasizing the urgency of strengthening cooperation with Taiwan, and suggesting signing bilateral trade or investment agreement with Taiwan to improve supply chain resilience.
Deputy Foreign Minister, Dr. Roy Chun Lee, said that in the face of global challenges, we must strengthen the collective resilience of democracies. Taiwan welcomes various proposals to strengthen bilateral relations between Taiwan and Europe, and jointly explore new and creative ways to increase bilateral cooperation.
Since its establishment, the Formosa Club has issued numerous statements and joint letters, supporting Taiwan's participation in the World Health Assembly, condemning China's continuous military threat against Taiwan, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and calling for the strengthening of Taiwan-EU Partnership!
