The Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy’s 2026 Midshipmen Cruising and Training Squadron visited Belize from April 21 to 22, 2026. Their previous visit was 13 years ago. The squadron received a warm welcome from the Government and general public of Belize. Over 800 people participated in the squadron’s series of activities, drawing positive coverage from local media and public opinion.
The squadron—comprising the Fast Combat Support Ship ROCS Pan Shi, and two frigates ROCS Yueh Fei and ROCS Di Hua—anchored at Belize City on April 21. Ambassador Amino Chi and his spouse, along with embassy staffs, members of Taiwanese overseas communities, and officials from the Belize Defence Force (BDF) and Coast Guard (BCG), gathered at the pier to welcome the squadron’s arrival.
On the evening of April 21, the squadron hosted a reception on ROCS Pan Shi . The guests attended included H.E. Dame Froyla Tzalam, Governor-General of Belize, Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister, and his spouse, Hon. Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs, along with several other cabinet members. During his speech, Prime Minister Briceño emphasized that all nations have the right to determine their own future. He reaffirmed the stability of the Taiwan-Belize diplomatic ties and thanked Taiwan for its continued assistance in Belize’s journey toward sustainable development.
The following morning, on April 22, the Squadron held a Marching Band performance outside the Embassy at the Memorial Park, attracting over 400 spectators. Francis Usher, CEO of the Ministry of National Defence, also expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s contributions, describing Taiwan as an indispensable partner. Later, a brief two-hour public opening of ROCS Pan Shi further attracted more than 300 visitors.
Additionally, members of BCG visited ROCS Yueh Fei and ROCS Di Hua. They also conducted joint underwater tasks with Taiwan’s Navy Underwater Operation Unit to gain insight into Taiwan's defence technology and operational capabilities.
This visit not only further consolidated the friendship between Taiwan and Belize, but also demonstrated Taiwan's determination to strengthen its defence capabilities to maintain peace. Taiwan remains committed to assisting Belize and other diplomatic allies in development and prosperity while enhancing cooperation with like-minded nations to safeguard regional stability.
