Ambassador Amino Chi wrote to Belizean media expressing the position that Taiwan strongly opposes China’s “Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law” and urges the international community to jointly counter authoritarian expansionism.
The article highlights Taiwan’s strong opposition to China’s so-called Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law, which attempts to exercise its long-arm jurisdiction and transnational repression through domestic legislation. We reaffirm that the ROC (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country and that neither the ROC (Taiwan) nor the PRC (China) is subordinate to the other. As a free and democratic country, Taiwan guarantees its people the freedoms of speech and thought in accordance with the law.
Taiwan and Belize are longstanding democratic partners, united by our shared values and commitment to democracy, freedom, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Belize and like-minded partners to safeguard these shared values and uphold the rules-based international order.
