Representative Winston Chen attended the CPTPP for Taiwan event virtually on March 4, 2022, asking Canada's support for Taiwan's CPTPP bid.
In his remarks, Representative Chen stressed that the Asia-Pacific region is extremely important to Canada's future trade and investment growth, and Taiwan's economic development is among some of Asia's strongest in recent years. In 2021, Taiwan-Canada bilateral trade increased by more than 40%. Moreover, Taiwan's investment in Canada has doubled. As a result, Taiwan's participation in the CPTPP will bring considerable market opportunities to Canada and other member states. In January 2022, Taiwan and Canada have jointly announced the launch of exploratory discussions on the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA). He called on Canada to continue this positive development and momentum, and support Taiwan's participation in the CPTPP to achieve a win-win situation.
The event was hosted by the Taiwan Merchants Association of Toronto and the Toronto Chinese Traders Association. (To learn more about the event, here is a story by the Toronto Star: Business leaders ask Canada to support Taiwan)
