The Third Hengshan Calligraphy Research Award Now Accepting Global Submissions through Nomination and Open Call

Grand Prize: NT$150,000. Global Call for Papers Now Open!

The Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center (HCAC) in Taoyuan, Taiwan, which aims to construct a hub for the development of calligraphy art in Asia, is pleased to announce the launch of the third Hengshan Calligraphy Research Award. This award aims to nurture and support research talent in the field of calligraphy, focusing on various dimensions such as local and global perspectives, tradition and innovation, as well as theory and practice. The Award strives to promote academic research and development in the field of calligraphy.

The Award includes a dual-track system, incorporating both a nomination committee and an open call for submissions. The awardee of the Grand Prize will receive TWD 150,000 ($4,660), and each awardee of Merit Award will be given TWD 30,000 ($930). Through this initiative, the HCAC hopes to attract high-quality research papers from around the world and foster active participation and discussion among calligraphy enthusiasts. The submission period is from December 2, 2024, to April 30, 2025, with online applications available on the Hengshan Awards website.

Three Key Highlights: Acceptance of Multilingual and Published Papers, Additional Travel Subsidy for Awardees

This year’s award features three notable updates:

  1. Multilingual Submissions: To broaden the scope of research exchange, the Award will accept submissions in English and Japanese in addition to Chinese.
  2. Acceptance of Published Papers: Research papers written or published between January 1, 2021, and April 30, 2025, are eligible. Authors of published works must provide proof of authorization from the original publisher or platform.
  3. Travel Subsidy for Awardees: To encourage interaction and collaboration among calligraphy researchers, the award will subsidize travel expenses for awardees to participate in the Award ceremony and presentation seminar. International awardees will also receive additional funding to cover round-trip airfare.

The HCAC encourages participation from researchers of all nationalities, ages, and geographical locations, hoping to generate a rich and diverse exploration of calligraphy studies.

International Nomination Committee: Discovering New Talent and Fostering Diverse Perspectives

This year’s Award has invited renowned calligraphy scholars from both Taiwan and abroad to form an international nomination committee, including distinguished members such as:

  • He Yan-chiuan, Researcher and Section Chief, Department of Painting, Calligraphy, Rare Books and Historical Documents, National Palace Museum
  • Ho Pik Ki, Peggy, Research Fellow at the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong
  • Aida Yuen Wong, Professor of Fine Arts and East Asian Studies, Brandeis University
  • Kanno Chiaki, Professor, the Institution of Art and Design, University of Tsukuba
  • Huang Chih-yang, Dean of the College of Humanities and Arts, Huafan University
  • Dai Jiamiao, Professor, College of Calligraphy, China Academy of Art

These experts will collaborate to identify emerging talents and gather diverse research perspectives. In addition, an international jury panel comprised of leading figures in the field of calligraphy research will be established to evaluate the competition’s submissions.

Strengthening the Brand Identity of the Hengshan Awards

Established in 2020, the Hengshan Awards—under the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts (TMoFA) and administered by the HCAC—is a prestigious platform for promoting the exhibition, research, and critique of calligraphy art in Taiwan. The Hengshan Awards consist of three categories: the Hengshan Calligraphy Award, which recognizes excellence in calligraphy art exhibitions; the Hengshan Calligraphy Research Award, which rewards outstanding academic research; and the Hengshan Calligraphy Criticism, which promotes critical discourse on calligraphy through regular open calls and invitations.

To build a comprehensive brand image, the logo of the Hengshan Awards has been refined this year. Inspired by the Chinese character for “mountain” (山), the new logo consists of three ink blocks representing different brushstrokes, symbolizing breakthrough, excellence, and innovation. This distinctive design highlights the unique characteristics of the three categories. Through exhibitions, research, and critique, the Hengshan Awards aim to enhance their international presence and contribute to the ongoing development of calligraphy art.
