Taiwanese Canadian Association of Toronto (TCAT) hosted the 2015 Taiwan Day celebration at Toronto’s Woodbine Park on May 30. The event featured performance by the Dance Troupe of College of Indigenous Studies, National Dong Hwa University from Taiwan. In their performance, the troupe showcased the beauty of indigenous music and dance cultures of Taiwan. Their dancing and singing told the folk stories of Taiwanese aboriginal people and their lives, fully displaying Taiwan’s indigenous cultures. In addition to the Dong Hwa Dance Troupe, the event also offered other live performances by some local groups. Booths of delicious Taiwanese cuisine were set up for those who had looked forward to the taste of Taiwanese fine foods.
Ambassador Rong-chuan Wu, Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Toronto, was invited to join the celebration. In his remarks, DG Wu told the audience that May is the Month of Asian Heritage in Canada. He pointed out that National Dong Hwa University’s Dance Troupe, with their showcasing of the beauty of Taiwan’s aboriginal culture, has chosen the best timing to display Taiwan’s soft power to all the different ethnic communities in Canada. DG Wu also thanked TCAT for hosting the event and for arranging Dong Hwa’s Dance Troupe to perform during the celebration. Despite the unstable weather condition, hundreds of Taiwanese community members were not deterred by the showers and they all showed up for the wonderful event with energy and enthusiasm.
