The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver is presenting a photography exhibition titled Taiwan Sublime from July 18 to August 20 at Richmond Cultural Centre. The exhibition features 20 photos by two Taiwan top photographers: Chen Chih-hsiung, and Liu Chen-hsiang, Their photos showcase Taiwan’s varied landscapes, diverse cultural and scenes.
The exhibition offers Canadians who have never traveled to Taiwan a wonderful introduction. For those who are familiar with Taiwan, the exhibition is a great chance to revisit the island.
Photographers
Both of the two photographers has a special knack for capturing a particular theme. The subtle contrast of light and dark hues so typical of a twilight scene is best exemplified by Chen’s photos. Chen has a keen appreciation of the spatial and temporal that makes his expansive, land-bound views particularly inviting.
Viewers who would like a taste of local Taiwanese culture will find Liu’s images of dance troupes a visual treat. A long-time photographic chronicler of Taiwan’s dance and traditional drama scenes, Liu freezes the fleeting bursts of dancers’ emotional power in a single frame..
A note on Taiwan
Taiwan is situated off the southern coast of China and in between Japan and the Philippines. The mix of tropical and subtropical weather contributes to the country’s rich scenery. While the confluence of Dutch, Japanese, Western and Chinese cultures helps make up Taiwan’s interesting and multifaceted heritage. The size of Taiwan is similar to that of the Vancouver Island.
