Director-General Liang, together with leaders of the Taiwanese community, attended the Ontario Legislative Assembly on June 4 to witness MPP Ernie Hardeman of Oxford County, hometown of Rev. Mackay, deliver a commemorative statement honoring George Leslie Mackay, the first Canadian missionary to Taiwan.
The statement also reaffirmed the strong and enduring friendship between Taiwan and Canada. A commemorative reception was held afterwards at Queen’s Park, with over 30 cross-parties MPPs joining the celebration.
Director-General Liang expressed to the attending MPPs and community leaders that the friendship between Taiwan and Canada has deep historical roots and continues to thrive. In Canadian Indo-Pacific Strategy launched in 2022, Taiwan was mentioned seven times.
The Strategy emphasizes a commitment to deepen cooperation with Taiwan in areas such as trade, technology, supply chains, public health, democratic governance, and countering disinformation. Canada also highlighted its intention to continue to grow its economic and people-to-people ties with Taiwan.
Taiwan’s relationship with Oxford, Ontario and Canada is expected to grow even stronger.
Director General also mentioned that it has been 153 years since Mackay first arrived in Taiwan. After decades of development, Taiwan is now capable of actively giving back to the international community by continuing to provide medical and humanitarian assistance to its diplomatic allies and friendly nations in need. "Taiwan Can Help, Taiwan Is Helping" is not just a slogan, it represents Taiwan’s commitment to global responsibility.
