Director General Rong-chuan Wu of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Toronto (Toronto TECO) visited Cambridge Memorial Hospital (CMH) on Dec.1 to present a cheque of $4665, the proceeds from ticket sales of Taiwanese opera “Hero Beauty,” which was jointly sponsored by Toronto TECO and Renison University College (RUC) and performed by the renowned Taiwanese opera group Ming Hwa Yuan at Cambridge’s Dunfield Theater on October 7. The proceeds were donated to the “TransformationCMH” campaign, which aims to purchase more equipment for CMH.
The donation ceremony was hosted by the chairman of CMH’s Foundation Board of Directors, Mike Takacs and its executive director, Jennifer White. Among those attended were Caroline Tanswell, Director of the Office of Advancement, RUC, Ken Seiling, Regional Chair of Waterloo, Paul Singh, Kitchener City Councilor, Robert Rosehart, Past President of Wilfrid Laurier University, Andrew Wu, Senior Advisor, Overseas Community Affairs Council, R.O.C. (Taiwan), Patrick Long, Editor-in-chief of Chinese Canadian Voice and other guests.
In his remarks, DG Wu spoke glowingly of the region’s connection to Taiwan and his pleasure in promoting local Taiwanese community’s involvement with CMH. DG Wu described the joint effort of TECO and RUC in sponsoring Min Hwa Yuan’s performance and donating the ticket sale proceeds as another example of the growing exchanges and close cooperation between Taiwan and Canada. He hoped the event would become a good model for further exchange and cooperation between the two countries.
In her remarks, Director Tanswell told the attending guests that Ming Hwa Yuan’s performance spoke well of RUC’s commitment to global engagement through education in languages and cultures; moreover, the combination of charity and the performance also embodied the spirit of the school’s educational goals: global engagement, social engagement and community empowerment.
