The Taiwan Gazette, an online journal dedicated to all aspects of Taiwan Studies, was launched on January 30 as a component of the Global Taiwan Studies Program at the Asian Institute, Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto.
According to the statement posted on The Taiwan Gazette’s website, the goal of the journal is to be “an online platform about Taiwan,” present Taiwan a site to think about larger global issues, issues that are beyond Taiwan, and allow Taiwan “to join the global conversation on issues of global concern,” and “making the 23 million distinctive voices from Taiwan heard in the world.”
By tapping into the University of Toronto’s active research network, the journal also plans to cover important Taiwan-related events happening on campus, including those activities hosted by the University’s Global Taiwan Studies Program. One of the activities is the “Big Ideas Competition,” in which students across three U of T campuses are invited to pitch an idea to study Taiwan. Selected awardees are provided with opportunities to conduct field research in Taiwan. The Taiwan Gazettecovers five research projects that win the 2017 competition.
As the rationale of the journal is to act as a forum and catalyst for Taiwan Studies, it also aims to help promote the development of new theoretical and methodological positions and perspectives generated via critical scrutiny of the particular experience of Taiwan. To do this, the journal will post commentaries, interviews, translations, book reviews, and original research and writing about Taiwan. It will also bring the readers translated works from Taiwan’s most popular Chinese-language new media website.
As a “miracle economy” and “Third Wave” democracy, Taiwan is a fascinating case for many areas of academic investigation. The Taiwan Gazette will help to develop wider and sustained scholarly interest in the study, research and teaching of the politics, culture, society, external relations and economy of Taiwan.
